EVEN as we move towards the final weeks of the 2013 season, mounting injuries have conspired to end it early for a number of players with Melbourne’s Mitch Clark and West Coast Eagles Beau Waters and Callum Sinclair being the latest players for whom this year’s home and away series is now offically over.
Waters, the Eagles’ vice-captain, had been out of action for the last few weeks with a knee injury but the club has now announced that he will have season-ending surgery in the next few days.
Callum Sinclair is also done for the year after having surgery on his right knee yesterday. The Eagles ruckman had hurt is knee playing for Subiaco in the WAFL several weeks ago, snd the resultant meniscus damage has meant surgery and an early end to the rookie’s season.
Meanwhile Melbourne’s football operations manager, Josh Mahoney, has said that ongoing foot problems have ended Mitch Clark’s season after just four appearances in 16 games this year.
“The club has reassessed Mitch’s foot injury on a weekly basis and projected timelines for when he would be available to play,” said Mahoney via the team’s website.
“It is now clear that there is insufficient time left in the season for him to fully recover and achieve appropriate match fitness preventing him from making a successful return.
“The focus will now switch to his preparation for pre-season training and a successful return to football in 2014.”
Clark, 25, suffered a LisFranc injury in Round 13 against the GWS Giants last year that ended his 2012 campaign. and re-injured his foot in Round 4 this year, coincidentally also against the Giants. The Demons may want to sit him out when they play GWS next year.
Clark has played in just 15 games for Melbourne since he joined the club from Brisbane before the beginning of last season.
